Shelter [Movie Review]

Shelter [Movie Review] | I did not manage to catch this one when it was showing in local cinemas.

During my recent trip to Hong Kong, I suddenly found myself with a pocket of quiet time. While waiting to break my fast in the comfort of my hotel room, I decided to finally press play.

Did I enjoyed it?

Once a prized blade in the government’s most feared shadow unit, the Black Kites, Michael Mason now lives in self imposed exile on a lonely Scottish island where the wind never rests and neither does his past. His only steady companion is a loyal dog and the weekly arrival of Jessie, a sharp eyed girl who has been carrying grief since childhood, ever since her mother died.

Everything changes on an ordinary supply run.

A sudden storm overturns Jessie’s small boat just within sight of Micheal’s cottage. He sees it happen through the window. By the time he reaches the shoreline, her uncle has vanished beneath the freezing waves, dragged down with the wreckage. Jessie survives. Barely. Micheal pulls her from the sea and for the first time in a long while, chooses to care. He dries her clothes, feeds her and later crosses to the mainland to buy what she needs.

He keeps his head low. Or at least he tries to.

A group of girls livestreaming outside a shop unknowingly captures his face. Somewhere far away, his former handler Manafort is watching. A ghost has resurfaced. And ghosts must be buried properly.

What Manafort does not know is why Micheal disappeared in the first place. Ordered to eliminate a target, Michael discovered the truth too late. The person was innocent. Instead of pulling the trigger, he faked his own death and vanished, trading loyalty for conscience.

Now the agency sends a team to correct that mistake. They do not return.

Michael flees with Jessie to a remote farm where Angus offers shelter, but the hunt escalates. Manafort releases his most efficient weapon, Workman, a man who does not miss and does not hesitate. What follows is a relentless game of pursuit, each hiding place more fragile than the last.

Michael understands the inevitable truth. As long as Jessie is near him, she is a target. So he does the one thing that hurts more than any bullet. He puts her on a boat bound for Spain, giving her distance, giving her a chance.

Then he turns back to face Workman.

In a world ruled by orders, can mercy keep him alive?
