The Housemaid [Movie Review]

The Housemaid [Movie Review] | When I spotted the poster, my first thought was, It’s Amanda! That alone felt like a good sign. Truth be told, I had absolutely no idea what the film was about.

So I went in blind.

Millie arrives at the Winchester house carrying more than a suitcase. She brings with her a past she cannot escape and a parole condition that leaves her with little room to refuse anything. Nina Winchester hires her as a live in maid, placing her in a pristine home in Great Neck. Millie is given an attic bedroom that locks from the outside.

Nina is unpredictable, swinging between brittle sweetness and sudden cruelty, giving instructions only to later deny ever saying them. Millie quickly learns that survival here depends on obedience and silence. Andrew, Nina’s wealthy husband, presents himself as calm and attentive, offering quiet reassurance when Nina erupts. Their daughter Cece drifts through the house, withdrawn and watchful. Only Enzo, the groundskeeper, looks Millie straight in the eye and says what no one else will. She does not belong here.

As Millie settles in, fragments of Nina’s past surface. Years ago, Nina was institutionalized after allegedly trying to kill her child and herself.

Things unravel when Millie books a Broadway show and hotel stay at Nina’s request, only for Nina to deny it ever happened. Soon after, Nina leaves town with Cece. Andrew suggests he and Millie make use of the reservations. One lie folds neatly into another, and intimacy grows in the shadow of secrecy. By the time they return home, it is clear Nina knows everything. Millie’s past. Her prison sentence. Even what happened the night before.

A confrontation erupts between the two women, sharp and volatile. Andrew intervene and in a moment that feels both protective and calculated, he throws Nina out of the house. She leaves in tears.

The truth, when it finally surfaces, changes everything. Nina was never the monster. Andrew was. Meticulous, controlling and cruel, he turned love into confinement and tenderness into punishment. The attic was never just a room. It was his weapon. Nina hired Millie knowing Andrew would desire her, believing Millie might survive what she could not.

Will Millie find love or repeat Nina’s fate?
