Verity [Movie Review]

Verity [Movie Review] | It was either this or a horror movie. Somehow, I ended up choosing Anne.

Was that a brilliant decision or a terrible one?

Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer in New York who is barely keeping her career afloat when tragedy strikes. Still grieving the loss of her mother, Lowen gets an unexpected opportunity that could finally put her name on the map.

A publishing company approaches her with a rather unusual offer. Bestselling author Verity Crawford has been left unable to speak or move following a devastating car accident, but her hugely successful book series still needs to be completed. Lowen is offered the job because she writes in the same genre, and her novels have inspired Verity.

There is just one problem. She has to move into Verity's secluded lakeside home in Vermont.

Living with Verity's husband Jeremy and their surviving son Crew, Lowen begins digging through the author's notes, drafts and research in search of clues about where the unfinished story should go. What she finds, however, is something far more disturbing.

Hidden among Verity's papers is an unfinished manuscript that appears to reveal the darkest secrets of her marriage and family. The pages paint a disturbing picture of obsession, jealousy and resentment, particularly towards her own children. Lowen is horrified by what she reads and initially decides she wants nothing to do with it.

But curiosity gets the better of her.

As Lowen spends more time in the house, she also begins noticing something unsettling about Verity. Despite being supposedly unable to move or communicate, Verity seems to be watching her. Lowen begins to wonder whether she is imagining things or if something is happening that nobody else knows about.

Meanwhile, Lowen and Jeremy grow increasingly close. Their shared grief brings them together, but their attraction soon crosses a line neither of them can easily undo.

Then Lowen returns to the manuscript.

What she discovers changes everything she thought she knew about Verity, Jeremy and the tragedy that shattered their family. When Lowen finally confronts the truth she believes she has uncovered, the situation takes a much darker turn, leaving her caught in a house where nothing is quite what it seems and everyone appears to be hiding something.

When everyone has a version of the truth, who is actually telling the truth?
