Telaga Suriram [Movie Review] | I wanted to watch the movie in the cinema but was so busy with events that I couldn't make it. And then it was no longer playing. 

So when it airs on Netflix, of course I would give it a go. With Siti Nurhaliza singing the soundtrack, I am expecting the movie to be good.

• Inspired by a chilling true story, Osman Ali drew from a real case of a child’s death in an abandoned well and blending it with eerie folklore of haunted wells in rural Malaysia. 
• The movie was shot in 2022 and released in cinemas on 1 May 2025. 
• Although it ranked among the top 10 in audience choice, several cinemas pulled Telaga Suriram after just two weeks, a move the director blamed on early social media backlash.

Suriram is a 10-year-old girl, who befriends Maimon, a mute young woman. They are always together. When Suriram disappears, Maimon becomes the main suspect. 

Maimon becomes distant and violent after the disappearance of her best friend. Rohaya and Sopiyan, Suriram's parents, engulfed with grief, vowed to look for Suriram, as they both believe that she is still alive. 

When her lifeless body is found in an old village well, whispers of a satanic ritual begin to spread like wildfire. The villagers quickly assumed that Mak Tijah (Maimon's mother) and Maimon are the killers as they believe that these two are satan worshippers. Maimon is imprisoned by the villagers. 

Inspektor Kamila is brought in to uncover the truth about the case. With evidence pointing out that the disappearance is indeed a homicide, she is determined to uncover the truth. But as she delves deeper into the case, the haunting intensifies, and the line between the living and the dead begins to blur. The vengeful spirit grows stronger with each passing night, and the village sinks deeper into chaos.

Zakir, the son of village head Hj. Mulok, struggles to maintain order in the village. 

Who killed Suriram and why?

MY REVIEW

What I Like:  

• Nabila and Ellie's performance are the best! 
• The oldies vibe is spot on.
• I applaud the direction of the movie - not too dependant on it being a horror movie, but plays more on emotion. 

What I Don't Like:

• Don't get me start on the CGI. Sure, there are areas to improve upon, but why didn't they use better CGI? 
• The car fell into a swamp and the bottom of the swamp is rocky? I need some logic explanation please.
• Too long - at some points - the movie started to lose its focus.
• I still don't understand or find the connection about the deaths of some of the villagers.
• The ghost figure - halloween costume much?

Will I Watch It Again: I don't mind watching it again
