  • The film’s chilling concept of a “khodam” preventing death was inspired by a story from director Sidharta Tata’s own family where his great-grandfather was said to possess one that made dying impossible.
  • In the end, the “jin nasab” doesn’t vanish. It passes to the next generation, hinting that Wiryo’s bloodline will never escape its haunting curse.

The Wiryo family is seen as a picture of respectability and harmony. A tragic road accident shatters that façade when Bu Wiryo dies instantly, while her husband Pak Wiryo slips into a deep coma. Their youngest daughter, Retno, postpones her move to Surabaya to care for her ailing father. Beside her is Wati, the devoted elder sister. Together, they cling to hope, even as the doctors say there’s almost none left.

But hope turns to dread when strange whispers spread across the village. The neighbors claim Pak Wiryo possesses a “pegangan” — a mystical safeguard that binds his soul to this world, making it impossible for him to die. Soon, eerie occurrences begin haunting the family. Doors creak open on their own, shadows move in the corners and a chilling presence lurks in their home.

Things spiral further when Tarjo, Pak Wiryo’s son from his second marriage to Bu Giyem, appears but not to help, but to fight over inheritance. Wati agrees to Tarjo's suggestion as the inheritance will solve her problems as well.

As terror tightens its grip, Retno and Wati realize that their father’s suffering isn’t merely physical but it’s spiritual. Pak Wiryo’s past sins and dealings with dark forces have come to collect their due. His body may be failing, but his soul is trapped making him unable to cross over, tormented by the very entity he once summoned for power.

Desperate, the sisters seek ways to free their father and to let him die peacefully, if death will even take him.

What price must they pay to end his suffering?
