Khadam [Movie Review]

Khadam [Movie Review] | The trailer immediately grabbed my attention and it did not take long before I found myself sitting in a cinema, eager to see how the story would unfold.

So, did Khadam deliver an experience worthy of the silver screen or is this one better saved for a future Netflix movie night?

Set against the atmospheric backdrop of 1950s Malaya, Khadam follows Melor, a mute mother of two whose life is thrown into turmoil after the death of her mother.

However, her mother’s passing is anything but ordinary. Unable to move on, she lingers between worlds, waiting for Melor to accept the family’s inheritance of her khadam, a mystical companion more commonly known as a saka. What should have been a period of mourning quickly transforms into something far more unsettling as Melor is forced to embrace a legacy that has haunted the women in her family for generations. Only after she accepts the khadam does her mother finally find peace.

Initially, the presence of the khadam seems harmless, even helpful. Bound by duty and family tradition, Melor accepts its existence in the hope of shielding her children from the burden she has carried all her life. But things take a disturbing turn when the entity begins manifesting as a version of Melor herself, one who is more beautiful, more capable and increasingly adored by those around her.

As the khadam grows stronger, it gradually slips into every aspect of Melor’s life, assuming her role as a wife, a mother and eventually the heart of the household. The line between the real Melor and her supernatural counterpart becomes increasingly blurred, trapping her in a terrifying struggle to hold on to her identity.

The situation becomes even more complicated when Awang, Melor’s hot-tempered husband, returns home after months away. Surprisingly, the once harsh and distant man appears calmer, gentler and more affectionate towards Melor and their children. At the same time, Manis, Melor’s younger sister, urges her to leave everything behind, move to the city and sever ties with the khadam once and for all.

Meanwhile, Puteh and Hitam begin noticing strange occurrences around the house, including the unsettling presence of a second Melor.

Which Melor will stay behind to care for the family, no matter what it takes?
