Dusun Mayit [Movie Review] | I stumbled upon this one on Netflix while I was abroad. The trailer instantly hooked me, so I knew I had to give it a watch.

• Instead of using studio sets, the movie was filmed on Mount Welirang, where the cast and crew camped without phone signal to experience the characters' true isolation.

Four university students - Aryo, Raka, Yuni, and Nita - decide to conquer the majestic slopes of Mount Welirang. Exhausted by intense semester exams, they seek a thrilling escape. Equipped with boundless enthusiasm but dangerously minimal hiking experience, the girls, Yuni and Nita, are complete novices. 

The boys carry their own heavy baggage. Raka is an orphan, while Aryo harbors deep resentment, feeling abandoned after his father’s hasty remarriage following his mother’s passing. For them, this mountain is a temporary sanctuary from reality.

Initially, the trail is filled with lighthearted banter and laughter. However, the wilderness possesses its own unforgiving laws, where respect for the unseen is the ultimate rule for survival.

Tragedy strikes when Nita veers off course. Spotting a sacred ritual offering, she mockingly kicks it aside—a fatal mistake. Moments later, she plunges into a mysterious lake. When her friends pull her out, the Nita they knew is gone. Her body remains, but her vacant eyes and chilling demeanor suggest something ancient and malevolent has hitched a ride inside her soul.

Terrified, the group attempts an immediate descent, but the mountain twists against them. Trails vanish into dead ends, trapping them in a frustrating, endless loop.

Amidst the panic, a chilling whisper echoes directly into Yuni’s ear, "Once you enter, there is no return".

Suddenly, the dense fog parts to reveal a bustling marketplace hidden deep in the wilderness. Oddly, the crowd ignores their desperate pleas for help. They soon realize they have unwittingly crossed the threshold into Dusun Mayit, a supernatural realm serving as an inter-dimensional gateway.

Hope appears in the form of a mysterious local elder. He promises to guide them to safety, insisting they follow him to his home to evade the hunting spirits. However, his true revelation is bone-chilling. They are trapped in a purgatory that demands human sacrifices to sustain the dead. To their absolute horror, the friends look into the corner of the house and discover a young woman trapped inside a wooden cage.

With time running out and the supernatural forces closing in, the four friends are forced into a desperate gamble for their lives.

Can they escape the sinister clutches of Dusun Mayit or are they destined to stay there forever?

MY REVIEW

What I Like:  

• I always love learning about new cultures from a movie.  
• This one teaches us to respect the unseen and always be respectful, no matter where you go. 

What I Don't Like:

• Nothing new - the same old plot twist.
• The make-up effect kinda old. 

Will I Watch It Again: Not on my priority list to watch.
