Belzebuth [Movie Review] | This was another film recommended by a TikTok user, grouped in with movies often labelled as underrated.
But the real question is, does it actually deserve that label?

- A loose spiritual follow-up to Pastorela, also directed by Emilio Portes. The possessions referenced by Father Canetti are a subtle nod to the Devils featured in Pastorela.
- The maternity-ward scene drew pushback during production, but Portes refused to soften it, insisting it was crucial to the film’s vision of absolute evil.

The movie opens in a bright Mexican maternity ward, where detective Emmanuel Ritter cradles his newborn son alongside his wife, soaking in a moment of fragile, ordinary happiness. When Ritter is called away on duty and a nurse quietly takes over the nursery, the nurse suddenly takes out a scalpel and starts killing all the newborns in the nursery before slitting her own throat.
Five years later, Ritter is a man hollowed out by grief. He is emotionally distant, socially isolated and still defined by the loss that destroyed his family. Apparently his wife is dead, probably too heartborken after the death of their nweborn baby boy.
When he is assigned to investigate a mass killing at an elementary school committed by a child with no apparent motive, the past comes rushing back. Worse still, this turns out to be only the first in a string of incidents, all involving children, all seemingly random and all horrifyingly efficient. The cruelty of placing Ritter at the center of these cases feels intentional, as if the universe itself refuses to let him look away.

The comes Ivan Franco, an investigator tied to the Church who specializes in the paranormal. Ivan brings with him unsettling evidence such as recordings, symbols, and strange physical traces that suggest something older and far more malignant is at work. Ritter, skeptical but desperate, is forced to consider explanations that defy logic.
It isn’t until they encounter the heavily tattooed Vasilio Canetti that the final piece of the demonic puzzle clicks into place. A disgraced ex-priest, Vasilio reveals that the Messiah, the reincarnation of Jesus Christ, has been born in Mexico and that the wave of violence is the Devil’s attempt to wipe him out. This child, still only four years old, represents the ultimate obstacle to evil’s plans and must be destroyed by any means necessary. Reluctantly united, this unlikely trio is forced to work together to protect the boy and, in doing so, stand between the world and total damnation.
Who will win in the end—good or evil? What is truly good and otherwise?
