- Maa is Kajol’s chilling first step into horror.
- Unlike most horror films, Maa hit theatres uncut with a rare U/A rating in India.
- Maa quietly ties with Shaitaan (2023), sharing a supernatural universe that fans first picked up on through subtle hints and themes. Watch that one post-credit scene and you'll see the connection.

The movie starts depicting a Kali Puja ritual at a grand ancestral mansion in Chandrapur, West Bengal. A woman gives birth during the ceremony. The joy of welcoming a baby boy quickly turns eerie when it’s revealed she is carrying twins. The second child, a girl, is taken away by her father to the priestess leading the puja. The priestess prepares to sacrifice the baby girl under the shadow of a haunted tree. But even she hesitates, declaring that Goddess Kali would never demand such cruelty. Before sense can prevail, Joydev, blinded by power and entitlement, seizes the sword and completes the sacrifice himself.
Fast forward forty years. Shubankar, the surviving twin, lives a happy life in Kolkata with his wife Ambika and their 12-year-old daughter, Shweta. When Shubankar is called back to Chandrapur after his father’s death, tragedy strikes. On his return journey, a freak supernatural fire from the roots of that very haunted tree, takes his life. Grieving and confused, Ambika and Shweta travel to Chandrapur to settle the estate. Joydev, the family's friend and the village head, is there to welcome them and assist them in selling the estate.

In the village, Shweta befriends Deepika, the caretaker’s daughter. But when Deepika mysteriously vanishes after her first menstruation, only to return days later, unharmed but forever changed, Ambika realizes something far darker is at play. Other young girls share the same fate, leading Ambika and police officer Sarfaraz into an investigation that peels back layers of myth, superstition, and horror.
The rumous has it that the village has long been cursed by a bloodthirsty daitya, Amsaja, bound to the haunted tree and hungry for the female member of the family.
The only way to hinder the potential casualty is to perform the Kali Puja, but it has been ages since Goddess Kali appear in anyone's dream to allow the ritual to be carried out.
Can a mother’s devotion stand against a demon’s bloodthirsty legacy?
