Project Hail Mary [Movie Review]

Project Hail Mary [Movie Review] | I watched this one with my best friends. They told me it was a sad one, a real tear-jerker.

But expectations didn't matter to me. I just wanted to be with my people, regardless of where the story took us.

Ryland Grace wakes up in a sterile, white room with no memory of his name, his profession or why he is covered in electrodes. His only companions are two corpses and a computer that refuses to give him straight answers. As the fog of amnesia lifts, the terrifying reality sets in. He is millions of miles from Earth, the sole survivor of a desperate, last-ditch effort to save humanity from an extinction-level event. And he is not an astronaut. So, how will he maneuver the spacecraft?

Bit by bit, the back story of him being in the spacecraft returns. The sun is dying. A microscopic organism dubbed "astrophage" is consuming the solar output at an exponential rate. In less than thirty years, Earth will become a frozen wasteland. Ryland, once a disgraced molecular biologist turned middle-school teacher, was plucked from obscurity by the formidable Eva Stratt to join Project Hail Mary. The mission is simple yet suicidal: travel to planet Tau Ceti, the only nearby star seemingly immune to the plague, find a cure and send the data back via probes. Just send the data back as the fuel for the spacecraft is enough for a one way trip.

While navigating the lonely void, Grace encounters a massive, jagged spacecraft made of solid xenon. Its pilot is a five-legged, spider cum rock-like creature Ryland names Rocky. Despite their vastly different biology: Rocky hears through echolocation and speaks in musical chords, the two form an unbreakable bond. Rocky is also a lone survivor, his crew lost to the same stellar parasite. His planet is also facing the same future as Earth's. Together, they are two terrified scientists from different worlds, trying to solve a cosmic puzzle before their species vanish.

They discover "taumoeba," a predator that eats astrophage and keeps planet Tau Ceti in balance, but the triumph is short-lived. A catastrophic fuel leak and a biological mutation threaten to strand them both in the dark. Grace must grapple with the truth of how he ended up on this ship and face a final, heart-wrenching choice. He holds the key to saving Earth in one hand and the life of his only friend in the other. As Grace prepares the final probes for their long journey home, he realizes the true cost of being a hero.

Save humanity or save the one soul who saved you: which choice could he actually live with?
