Rego Nyowo [Movie Review]

Rego Nyowo [Movie Review] | The film appears on Netflix under the title Take Me to Hell, which initially confused me, as I thought it was a different movie. Only after realizing it was an Indonesian film did it make sense.

What’s more puzzling is the original title, Rego Nyowo, which literally means The Price of Your Life. It fits the story perfectly, making the choice of a generic English title feel unnecessary.

Lena arrives in Malang with the quiet hope of starting over. University awaits, along with a new city and the promise of independence. She is picked up by her older brother, Benhur, who has been in Malang for years studying architecture. He knows the city well, its hidden shortcuts, its cheap comforts and the compromises students learn to make just to get by. One of those compromises is the place he calls home, a low rent boarding house tucked away on the edge of town.

Benhur brings Lena to the house run by Bu Satri and her husband, Pak Wiryo, with help from their only son, Rian. At first glance, it feels like a rare find. The rooms are clean, the rent is almost suspiciously affordable and the owners greet their tenants with disarming warmth. Lena soon learns she will be sharing the house with eight other residents, a mix of students and working youths. Every weekend, they are invited to sit together for a home cooked meal, gathered around one table like a borrowed family. For those far from home, the ritual feels comforting, almost sacred.

The calm does not last.

One of the tenants, Bobi, begins complaining about disturbing dreams. He insists the house is haunted and talks about seeing ghosts in his sleep. His friend Yamin tries to calm him down, reminding him that they have just moved in and cannot afford to leave. Lena overhears their conversation but brushes it off as stress or imagination.

Then Bobi falls violently ill after one of the weekly dinners. That same night, he leaves without warning and returns to Jakarta.

Soon after his departure, Lena starts seeing things she cannot explain. A pocong appears and seems to be after her.

From there, the house begins to reveal its true nature. Tenants fall sick. Accidents happen. Death creeps closer with each passing night. Together with Yamin and the remaining residents, Lena digs into the house’s dark history, uncovering a pact that turns cheap rent into a deadly bargain.

How much is a life really worth and will Lena uncover the truth before the house claims its next victim?

What I Don't Like:

  • Yes, I still don't like the English title.
  • Why the focus on Lena instead on Bobi who can senses the ghost?

Will I Watch It Again: I probably would, but not in my top choices.

Overall: 3.7/ 5.0
