How To Train Your Dragon [Movie Review] | I am so excited to watch the live version of this animation. Will it stay true to the original story? Or will they overdo it, like some movies?

- Gerard Butler returns as Stoick, Hiccup’s tough but loving dad from How to Train Your Dragon (2010).
- Dean DeBlois is making history as the first to write and direct the live-action version of an animated film he originally created How to Train Your Dragon.
- A sequel was announced before the release of the film.
- In this version, Berk feels more diverse, with a quick nod to its villagers’ mixed heritage—unlike the original where everyone looked Nordic. We also finally get to meet Astrid’s parents, who were only ever mentioned in the animated series.

Life in the Viking village of Berk isn’t exactly peaceful – not when dragons are constantly dropping by uninvited, snatching sheep and setting everything on fire. In the middle of all this chaos is 15-year-old Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, a scrawny inventor who’s also the son of the village chief, Stoick the Vast. Unlike the other burly Viking kids, Hiccup prefers tinkering with gadgets over swinging swords, which makes him an odd fit.
During one dragon raid, Hiccup actually manages to shoot down a dragon – not just any dragon, but an elusive, rare and mysterious Night Fury. The problem is, no one believes him. Determined to prove himself, he tracks down the creature but finds it injured and helpless. And instead of delivering the final blow, Hiccup does something unheard of: he lets it go.
Surprisingly, the dragon spares him, and the two slowly form a bond. Hiccup names him Toothless, due to his quirky retractable teeth. Toothless can’t fly properly anymore, so Hiccup builds a prosthetic tail fin and learns to fly alongside him. In secret, he also discovers that dragons aren’t the terrifying beasts everyone believes. They’re just misunderstood.

Back in Berk, Stoick heads out to destroy the dragons’ nest, leaving Hiccup in dragon-fighting training with other teens, including his crush, Astrid. Though clumsy at first, Hiccup starts acing training thanks to his new insights, which raises eyebrows (especially Astrid’s). Instead of using brawn, he connects with the dragons - their love for scratches and that they are allergic to pollens.
When she discovers his secret, he shows her the truth by taking her on a breathtaking flight. That’s when they stumble upon the real threat - the dragon nest where a monstrous dragon called the Red Death, forcing smaller dragons to raid villages to feed it. Red Death is the Queen and she eats the others when the raid does not quench her hunger.
Hiccup wants to protect Toothless and keep the peace, but things spiral. During a public dragon challenge, he refuses to kill and instead tries to show that dragons can be kind. Chaos erupts, Toothless steps in to save him, and Stoick, heartbroken and confused, captures Toothless and heads to the nest for battle.
What will Hiccup do to save Toothless, and probably his father and their village?
