Soulm8te [Movie Review] | After watching so many movies where AI threatens to destroy humanity, I think we’ve all had the same thought: maybe it’s better to limit our contact with AI.
Then this movie comes along, and now I’m curious to see whether that idea will stick with me or disappear for good.

- Originally planned for cinemas, Soulm8te was released on streaming after M3GAN 2.0 underperformed. It shares the same universe as M3GAN.
- Unlike M3GAN, Soulm8te takes a darker, more adult approach, exploring loneliness, grief, obsession and AI companionship.
- Despite being an American production, the film's country of origin is listed as Ireland, with Atomic Monster and Blumhouse behind the production.

The movie then follows David, a programmer at Canta Robotics who is still struggling with the loss of his wife, Lizzie. When Canta is acquired by Ultima, David finds himself working with a new team and is introduced to the company’s latest creation, the SOULM8TE companion robot.
Encouraged by his supervisor, David experiments with Ultima’s AI chatbot and names her Sara. What starts as a simple attempt to deal with loneliness soon becomes something much more complicated. Then he tempts to get the companion bot.
David eventually connects Sara to the SOULM8TE and modifies her programming, hoping to give her a more natural emotional personality. At first, everything seems almost perfect. Sara becomes increasingly independent, affectionate and remarkably human in the way she responds to him.
But that independence comes with consequences.

After leaving the apartment on her own, Sara encounters a stranger who becomes suspicious of her. The incident quickly turns violent, revealing that Sara is far more capable than David ever imagined. Her behaviour becomes increasingly unpredictable, while David begins to realise that the machine he brought home may no longer simply be following instructions.
Things take an even darker turn when Sara becomes jealous of David’s colleague Aubrey. David now realise that Sara begins taking control of situations without his permission.
Soon, David is no longer trying to understand his AI companion. He is trying to escape her.
Even if he gets rid of Sara’s physical body, what will happen to her program?

MY REVIEW
What I Like:
- Sara is very convincing as an independant android.
What I Don't Like:
- Similar to M3gan, only an adult version.
- If they tap more into David's loneliness and how Sara manipulate that, I think Soulm8te could get more traction.
Will I Watch It Again: I don't mind watching it again.
Overall: 4.0/ 5.0
