I Attended The Canadian Agri-Food Seminar And I Want To Travel To Canada | This week, I was supposed to fly to attend a conference in Vancouver, Canada for 5 days. I was so looking forward to going, as it will be my very first international travel after 2 - 3 years of being locked down (as are the rest of the world). 

And then Omicron happens, and as the number gets bigger, the organiser decided to bring the whole conference online. So, there goes my dream of exploring the streets and enjoying the culture of Canada.

And then I get to know about The Canadian Agri-Food Promotion Seminar that will be hosted by the High Commmission of Canada in Malaysia. 

Yes! I must attend this!

Mr Thomas Abols, the First Secretary and Trade Commissioner of the High Commmission of Canada in Malaysia hosted the session and man, did I learned a lot about Canada from the session. 

We were served with the food brought specially for the event (using Canada's products and cooked using Canada's products) and they tasted YUMMY!

Interesting Agricultural Facts of Canada

So here are some of the facts about Canada that I learned from the session - of course it will be about the agricultural culture in Canada.

The Soy Whisperer

Soy is the third largest field crop in Canada (in terms of farm cash receipts).  And you might do not know this: you might have bought, cooked and tasted the soy of Canada.

See any familiar products here? Yes, all these products uses soy from Canada. Now you know it. 

The Canola Leader

Canola was first introduced to the world  by Canada in 1960s. Since, it has developed and evolved so much that now Canada is the world's leader in terms of production and export of its products.  

And now, Canada is introducing Canolein, an interesting and exciting new, patent-free product that combines both Palm and Canola oils.

What? Will this be a competition against palm oil, the largest exports of Malaysia? Certainly no - it will be complementing our palm oil. 

 

The Grand Silo of Grains and Wheat 

These two are another great exports of Canada. Yearly, Canada is producing more than 32 million tonnes of wheat, 8 million tonnes of barley and 3 million tonnes of oats. 

That's millions of tonnes of produce each year! And with such huge resources, the agricultural research team of Canada gets to continue their R&D on the resources, with the end results are improved versions of these resources to market to the whole world.  

Now you know that the variety of cereals, oats, barleys, drinks and many more items on the market most probably originates or made of resources from Canada. 

 

Ontario Ginseng?

Wait! Ain't ginseng originates mostly from Asia? 

Not all as Panax Quinquefolious Ginseng (or also known as North American Ginseng, NAG) is native to Canada and it is one of the oldest trades of the country. 

The discovery of the first NAG dated back in 1700s somewhere in Montreal by a Jesuit Priest and since then, has become a valued trade of Canada. It is one of the first valued exports with Asia and is highly valued for its superior quality and sweeter taste. 

Seafood & Pork Exports

These two are also among the valued exports of Canada.

As Canada is surrounded by oceans on three sides (the Pacific, the Arctic and the Atlantic) and home to the largest freshwater lake system in the world, Canada offers variety and quality of seafood to the world. 

Some 160 species of fish and shellfish of premium quality are being shared with the whole world as fresh, frozen, smoked and canned seafood products. 

Canada is one of the largest global producers of pork and the superior meat is vetted using food safety regulations before being exported. 

Investment and Education Opportunities @ Canada

The Canadian Trade Commissioner Service (TCS) is the governmental body that will assist trading between Canada and the rest of the world. With its 160 offices all over the world, TCS allows everyone to trade with any Canadian entities of their choice. 

With such huge opportunities and resources available, it is natural that many countries will be investing, opening offices, collaborating and exploring many more avenues in Canada. Canada is a huge country, after all.
