Don't Leave The Kids Alone [Movie Review]

Don't Leave The Kids Alone [Movie Review] | Growing up, I always looked forward to having the house all to myself whenever my family visited my grandparents and I managed to come up with an excuse not to tag along.

Well, this movie brings back a little of that childhood excitement, except that being home alone in this movie si far more terrifying and ridiculously dangerous.

  • A massive 687 cubic foot structure was built over the Camacho house and backyard to block sunlight and simulate nighttime filming during the day.
  • The dried bloodstain in Catalina’s bedroom closet, where Loera allegedly locked up his wife, was already there when filming began and its origin remains unknown. Even stranger, the house’s boiler had been out of service for 13 years before mysteriously switching on by itself on the second day of shooting.

The movie is set in the late 1970s or early 1980s. Recently widowed single mother Catalina has just moved into a new house on Elm Street with her two young sons, ten year old Matías and seven year old Emiliano. Still grieving their father’s death, the brothers have a rather complicated relationship. Matías often teases his younger sibling, while Emiliano desperately wants to be his mother’s favourite. With emotions running high and sibling rivalry reaching boiling point, the last thing Catalina needs is trouble at home. Unfortunately, when their babysitter cancels at the last minute, she has little choice but to leave the boys alone overnight while attending to an urgent work matter.

Naturally, the boys waste no time breaking the rules. Pizza, television and a treasure hunt through mountains of unpacked moving boxes sound like a perfect evening. That is until they stumble upon a mysterious box containing strange occult objects and an old Ouija board. Soon, an eerie red rotary telephone begins ringing, unexplained noises echo through the house and objects mysteriously move when nobody is watching.

At first, the strange occurrences seem like harmless mischief or an overactive childhood imagination. However, something sinister is lurking within the walls and it knows exactly how to exploit the boys’ deepest fears. Through chilling whispers, disturbing hallucinations and carefully crafted mind games, the mysterious entity begins turning the brothers against each other, convincing each that the other wants him dead to become their mother’s only child.

Meanwhile, Catalina begins uncovering disturbing secrets about the house’s previous occupants, revealing a history far more sinister than she could have imagined. As the night grows darker, everyday household objects become potential weapons, familiar rooms turn into terrifying traps and the boys’ already fragile relationship threatens to spiral completely out of control.

What begins as a mischievous night of childhood freedom soon becomes a claustrophobic fight for survival, where fear lurks around every corner and trust becomes their most dangerous gamble.

Can the brothers figure out who is truly their enemy before it is too late?

MY REVIEW

What I Like:

  • I kinda hate the brothers because they were too naughty and hyperactive. But that means they are great in their delievry right?

What I Don't Like:

  • I grew tired waiting for the horror parts, which only appear towards the last parts of the movie.
  • What's with the ending? I want closure!

Will I Watch It Again: I would, but not in my priority list.

Overall: 4.1/ 5.0
