Kuala Lumpur : A City With A GLAM

Thanks Marta for choosing me to publish your work.

Inilah hasil penulisan Marta berkenaan Kuala Lumpur.

Hi! Let me start by presenting myself: my name is Marta and I am an expat in Malaysia. I have been living in Kuala Lumpur for about three month now and I have to say that this city really surprised.

Well, the entire country surprised me to be honest: from the beautiful islands of Kapas to the amazing views in Genting but the biggest surprise was without a doubt Kuala Lumpur.

I was already expecting breath taking views and amazing beaches but I was definitely not expecting such a vibrating, trendy city.

I travelled a lot around Europe, from London to Milan, and believe me: Kuala Lumpur can easily compete with the trendiest cities there!
There are three things I can stand out in the city: shopping paradise, food and restaurants and bars/clubs.

Shopping
KL is the shopping paradise! In here, I especially like the fact that you can do all the types of shopping, from bargaining for “fakes” in Chinatown to get access to the most exclusive brands.
Bargaining here has become almost one of my favorite hobbies and Chinatown is by far my spot for that. It is surprising how real some imitations can look like and how much variety exists here. I have to be honest, I don’t mind at all buying fake items as long as they look good.
But yes, sometimes I feel like treating myself with something special. In this occasions Pavillion, Mid Valley or Suria KLCC are my favorite spots the difficult part here is to choose what to buy and where to buy it!

Food Food Food
Delicious is not enough to start describing the food around here: it is not easy to find a word that makes justice to the reality. I love both the food hawkers or more local places and the trendy cool western restaurants. Marini’s on the 57th, La Bodega, Ciccio... the list of amazing restaurants here is infinite.

Only in Changkat it is possible to find a lot of them: modern, glamorous, cool. (Comparing to Europe it is extremely cheap). I especially like restaurants on rooftops as the song says “I am on top of the World”.
I have to confess that I love all this modern, trendy places but I also can’t stay more than two/three days without going for a “Nasi Lemak” or a Naan with tandoori chicken in the more local places!

Bars and Clubs
The night scene in Kuala Lumpur is really comparable to the one in Europe. Where does Kuala Lumpur find its main advantage?

The weather! It is so good to be able to go out without carrying one (or more) jacket around and then it is cold outside and super-hot inside any establishment, that can be a struggle. The warm weather during the whole year makes it a perfect city to walk around during the night with zero concerns. Besides that there are some really good bars to have a drink with your friends (and once again I stand out the rooftop bars here) and good clubs to end the night: Zouk, Providence or The Pool (in any of these, if you would tell me I was in a European club I would not even doubt it).

I have to confess, Kuala Lumpur was a pleasant surprise and although I miss home, being in a city like this makes it easier!

Thanks Marta for trusting me with your piece.

We Malaysians have a lot to be thankful for, right Marta?
