Whalefall [Movie Review]

Whalefall [Movie Review] | As a Marine Science graduate and a diver (read: ex diver, since it has been a good 25 years since my last dive), the trailer immediately piqued my interest.

Yes, I do have a bit of thalassophobia, but I still believe the ocean is a beautiful, mysterious world waiting to be explored.

That said, I have a feeling this movie might just make my fear of the deep, dark sea a whole lot worse!

Whalefall is a scientific term describing what happens when a whale dies and its body sinks to the ocean floor, creating a rich source of food and an entire ecosystem for deep sea organisms.

A year after his father’s death, college student Jay returns to the California coast carrying more emotional baggage than diving equipment. His relationship with his late father, Mitt, was far from loving. It was filled with conflict, resentment and unresolved pain. When Mitt chose to end his life by strapping weights to himself and plunging into the Pacific Ocean, he left his family without a body to mourn. He also left behind a letter that Jay has stubbornly refused to read.

Hoping to bring home at least one bone for his mother, Zara, and sisters, Eva and Nan, Jay decides to do what might be the most reckless thing imaginable. Using the scuba diving skills his father taught him as a child, he ventures into the cold waters off California’s coast, armed with just one hour of oxygen and a desperate need for closure.

While exploring the depths near an underwater canyon, Jay finds himself caught in a terrifying encounter between a giant squid and a massive sperm whale. Before he can make sense of the chaos, the enormous creature swallows both its prey and an extremely unlucky Jay.

Now trapped inside one of nature’s most extraordinary creatures, Jay must find a way out before the whale’s digestive system, dwindling oxygen supply and unforgiving ocean claim his life. Every desperate attempt to escape pushes him closer to physical destruction, while encounters with the ocean’s unpredictable wildlife make survival feel almost impossible.

But the real battle is happening inside Jay’s head. As exhaustion and fear take hold, memories of his father begin to surface, forcing him to confront years of anger, regret and words left unsaid. Somewhere between life and death, Jay begins to understand the complicated man who raised him and the painful distance that kept them apart.

With time running out, will Jay fight for survival or surrender to the ocean’s depths?
