The trouble begins when Azrael, a deadly vigilante struggling with his own violent instincts, crosses paths with Batman. Desperate for help, Jean Paul Valley aka Azrael seeks guidance from the Dark Knight while battling the psychological conditioning that has turned him into a weapon.

Meanwhile, a far more dangerous threat is emerging from the shadows.

Born and raised in the brutal confines of Peña Duro Prison, Bane has spent his entire life learning one lesson. Weakness is something to be destroyed. After enduring unimaginable suffering, he transforms himself into a formidable force through relentless physical training and a dangerous super steroid known as Venom. But Bane is not merely interested in becoming stronger. He has his sights set on Gotham City and he knows exactly who stands in his way. He intends to face and defeat Batman.

As Bane sets his plan into motion, Arkham Asylum is attacked, releasing some of Gotham's most dangerous criminals back onto the streets. Batman and Robin are suddenly overwhelmed by a city descending into chaos, forcing them to confront one threat after another.

But there is a problem. Bruce Wayne is exhausted, emotionally fractured and increasingly reckless. Haunted by past tragedies and struggling to cope with years of fighting crime, he refuses to acknowledge that he may finally be reaching his limits. Even those closest to him, including Alfred and Tim Drake, struggle to make him listen.

For Bane, this is the perfect opportunity.

With an intimate knowledge of Batman's history, relationships and weaknesses, he begins orchestrating a campaign designed to wear the Dark Knight down physically and psychologically. As the danger escalates, Robin, Azrael and the rest of Batman's allies find themselves caught in a battle that threatens to change Gotham forever.

This time, can Batman survive his most personal battle yet?
