Suzzanna: Malam Jumat Kliwon [Movie Review] | Another Suzzanna movie review from me. Why? Because why not! Since most of the films are now available on Netflix, I figured it was the perfect time to binge them all and see for myself whether the legendary horror icon truly lives up to the hype. 

Consider this my personal journey through the Suzzanna universe, one film at a time, to find out which ones are genuinely worth watching.

• Luna Maya spent up to four hours in prosthetic makeup daily and even gained weight while studying Suzzanna's expressions and voice to faithfully portray the iconic horror legend.
• Despite sharing the same title as the 1986 classic Malam Jumat Kliwon starring the legendary Suzzanna, the 2023 film tells a completely new story. It is a tribute to the original rather than a direct remake.

Suzzanna and Surya are deeply in love and dream of spending the rest of their lives together. Their future seems certain as they prepare for marriage until a devastating family debt changes everything. Suzzanna's parents owe a large sum of money to Raden Aryo, the wealthiest and most influential man in the village. Unable to repay what they owe, they are left with an impossible choice. The debt will be forgiven only if Suzzanna agrees to become Raden Aryo's second wife.

With no other way to save her family, Suzzanna sacrifices her own happiness. The forced marriage tears her away from Surya, leaving both of them heartbroken.

Not long after the wedding, Suzzanna becomes pregnant with Raden Aryo's long awaited heir. While the household celebrates the coming child, Minati, Aryo's first wife, is consumed by jealousy. Unable to bear children herself, she turns to a trusted shaman and unleashes dark supernatural forces against Suzzanna.

As Suzzanna's pregnancy reaches its final days, strange and terrifying events begin to unfold. Hope quickly fades as an unseen evil closes in. On the sacred night of Jumat Kliwon, tragedy strikes. Suzzanna dies during childbirth, leaving behind a newborn daughter who falls into Minati's hands.

To bury the truth, Raden Aryo pays off Suzzanna's parents and sends them away to start a new life elsewhere, ensuring that the circumstances surrounding her death remain a closely guarded secret.

Only Ratih, Suzzanna's loyal assistant, reveals the heartbreaking truth to Surya. Refusing to believe that Suzzanna's fate should end this way, Surya makes a forbidden pact with a demon to bring her back to life. The cost is the soul of Suzzanna's newborn daughter.

Resurrected with one purpose, Suzzanna sets out to save her child before Minati can carry out her sinister plans. Together with Surya, they race against time in a desperate battle against dark forces, hidden secrets and the consequences of a deadly bargain.

Who will ultimately pay the price for the sins of the past?

MY REVIEW

What I Like:  

• Luna Maya is certainly committed to her character. 

What I Don't Like:

• If you're expecting a genuinely terrifying horror film, be prepared to feel a little underwhelmed. The movie relies very little on jump scares, and personally, that just wasn't enough to keep me on edge.

Will I Watch It Again: Yes and I am ready to watch more.
