At exactly 2:17 a.m. in sleepy Maybrook, an entire class of seventeen children vanished from their homes, all at the same time. How they know that all the kids were gone at the same time? The security alarm at some of the houses triggered and logged the same time.

By morning, teacher Ms Justine Gandy finds only one student, Alex Lilly, waiting for class.

The town erupts in panic. Whispers turn into accusations, and Justine finds herself the prime suspect in the court of public opinion. Under pressure, Principal Marcus Miller forces her to take leave. To cope with the pressure, Justine turns to alcohol and dangerous entanglements with her married ex, police officer Paul Morgan.

Still, something about Alex doesn’t sit right. When Justine follows him home, she notices the windows covered in newspapers, and his parents standing eerily still in the living room, giving her no mind. She tells Marcus about the encounter, who tells her to keep her distance from Alex and his family, to avoid legal implications.

Elsewhere, Archer Graff, father to one of the missing boys, has the same nightmares. Frustrated with the police’s dead ends, he starts his own investigation, discovering the kids had all run in the same direction before disappearing.

Then the story takes a darker turn. A local addict, James, breaks into Alex’s house and stumbles upon the missing children, all alive, but in the basement - just standing still. Before he can alert the police, Paul intervenes, and soon even he isn’t acting like himself.

It all links back to Gladys, Alex’s aunt. Once sickly, she moved into Alex’s home and through something dark and ancient, she regained her health by feeding on the children’s life force. She forced Alex to collect personal items from his classmates, using them to lure the kids into her grasp.

How will Maybrook escape from the grasp of Gladys?
