- Some scenes were shot in Gold Hill, Colorado, with additional filming at Copper Mountain Resort near the Timberline Lift. At the time, it was a 4-seater lift located over 8,000 feet up. By the movie's release, it had already been upgraded to a 6-seater.

It was three years after monstrous creatures known as Reapers burst from underground sinkholes and laid waste to civilization. In the first month alone, they wiped out 95% of humanity. Survivors fled to the only safe zones which are the mountaintops over 8,000 feet high, where the Reapers wouldn’t follow for some reason.
High up in Colorado’s Front Range lies Lost Gulch Refuge, home to Will, a single dad, and his son, Hunter, who battles a severe lung condition. Will carries the grief of losing his wife, Tara, during a failed mission to study the Reapers with Nina, a brilliant but reclusive scientist. Life is quiet and most communities have shut off their radios to save power, using flags to communicate. Hunter feels and dreads the isolation, and worse, Will is running dangerously low on oxygen filters for him.
Against Nina’s warnings, Will insists they go to Boulder to find more filters. Will’s loyal friend Katie joins them, and the trio travels down the treacherous Elba Fire Road, deep into the Reaper territory. Armed with Nina’s custom compass that senses the creatures’ energy pulses, and a few scavenged weapons, they trek through abandoned ski resorts and crumbling roads. One Reaper nearly catches them, but quick thinking and an old ski lift save their lives.

The next stop is an old mining tunnel, which Will knows well. But the problem is part of it dips below the safety line, and Nina’s compass won’t work underground. While navigating the underground tunnel, the Reaper strikes and Katie is killed. Will and Nina barely make it out alive.
Nina believes the Reapers’ armor uses magnetic defenses and that bullets laced with magnesium oxide could cause them to combust from the inside. In Boulder, they gather oxygen filters and narrowly escape another Reaper ambush. Nina shares that she, too, lost her family. Will returns to Hunter, while Nina stays behind to test her theory on the bullet that could kill the Reaper.
Will races home but is attacked until Nina arrives just in time, killing the creatures with her new bullet. The truth is finally clear: the Reapers aren’t living beings. They’re machines, built with alien tech.
Will is reunited with Hunter. A pirate flag is raised, signaling victory. Other mountain communities reconnect, ready to fight back. And fight back the communities did.
Will humanity regain control of Earth now that they have a way to fight back?
