The movie's background is in 1953. The play The Mousetrap by Agatha Christie is celebrating its 100th performance. During the celebration, Leo,an American director, tries to convince John, the producer of the play to allow him to direct the film adaptation of the play. John is a bit reluctant.

Leo, who is drunk, tries to woo Sheila, the female lead and the wife of the star, Richard. Richard hates that and the two gets into a fight. Leo, defeated, goes backstage to change his dirty shirt after the fight. An unseen assailant attacks and kills him in the room.

Inspector Stoppard is called to investigate the murder with Constable Stalker's assistance. Everyone at the theater is declared as a suspect. Inspector Stoppard wants to close the theater until the case is solved but his superior advised him against it.

As he investigates more into the case, he realises that everyone the play has some motives to kill Leo. Leo was seen arguing with Mervyn, the screenwriter over the vision of the potential film. Mervyn tells him that he saw a plain woman arriving at Leo's apartment with his son during the day of the fight.

Woolf is being blackmailed by Leo over his affair with his assistant Ann. Petula, the play's producer will not be able to produce the adaptation until the show is closed.

Stalker drives Stoppard home after their night-out where he sees the portrait of Stoppard's ex-wife. She sees the resemblance of the 'plain woman' that Mervyn mentioned. And after referring to her notes, Stalker comes to a conclusion that Stoppard could be the killer. She then immediately searches for Stoppard's ex-wife number in Leo's address book.

During the performance of The Mousetrap, Mervyn is killed at the foyer. And Stalker comes just in time to see Stoppard standing over the dead body before running out of the theater. She gives chase and manages to knock him unconscious with a snow shovel.

Stoppard awakens in a cell, with his superior and Stalker accuses him as a murderer. When Joyce, the woman who Stalker assumes is his ex-wife, walks in, Stoppard tells them that he has never seen that woman before. And this clears him of the accusation.

Now, who is the killer and what is the motivation of the double murders?
