How to best enjoy a walk in KL Bird Park?

How to best enjoy a walk in KL Bird Park? | Growing up in Sibu, Sarawak and in the heart of Sarikei, I always thought that I have seen almost all animals and birds that are native to us Malaysians. Thus, I never visit Zoo Negara, ever since I first stepped my foot here in Selangor.

Last holiday (during Christmas day pula tu), Mahamahu invited me to join him for a KL Bird Park tour in the heart of KL. Since I'm not going anywhere, I said yes. And the trip totally changed my seen-it-all view. I totally took all these parks for granted - there are Butterfly Park and many more located adjacent to each other in one vicinity. So, if you are in town, please do visit all these parks.

We were there at 9 am, just as the park was opening. And the best way to enjoy a walk is to have a full stomach (says me hahaha). So we went to have breakfast at the Hornbill Restaurant & Cafe. And guys, everything on the menu is DELICIOUS. Try them all if you come in a large group. And don't forget to try the banana fritters - THE BEST and FLUFFY!

After we're done with breakfast and purchased the entrance ticket, we were ushered into the park. All SOPs were in place - the MySejahtera check-in, the temp check, hand-sanitisers and a constant reminder by the staff to always practise social distancing. I have to applaud the staff for always reminding the patrons to practise social distancing, they were all around the park, reminding and assisting the patrons at the same time. Very friendly staff too at that!

Did you know that KL Bird Park is the world's largest free-flight walk-in aviary? Yes, it is the largest in the world guys. So, what does a free-flight walk-in aviary means?

It means that the birds here are let free in the aviary that has been built to resemble their natural habitat (in Zone 1, 2 and 3 whereas Zone 4 is where cages and mini aviaries are located). With such freedom and surrounding that resembles their natural habitat, they are able to breed naturally.

Another fun fact is KL Bird Park is currently a home for more than 3,000 local and foreign birds of approximately 200 different species living in a sprawling 20.9 acres of land.

Bangga tak? I know I am!

The best way to enjoy KL Bird Park

Here are some pointers I would like to share with all of you, based on my recent trip there.

  1. KL Bird Park Malaysia, Aktiviti Cuti Sekolah, Bird Park Kuala Lumpur, Hornbill Restaurant, Rawlins GLAM, Rawlins Lifestyle, Rawlins Travels
If you are driving here, be here early as there are limited parking spaces near the park. However, you may park at the nearby/ walking distance parking spaces available outside of the park. You'll enjoy the view along the way, I guarantee that.
  2. I recommend it is best to visit early in the morning as the sun is not that hot and the area will be shady and windy.
  3. Bring along an umbrella or wear a hat/ cap. You're entering the birds' territory, so you'll never know if one decides to just 'bless' you with their giftings from above. An umbrella, hat/ cap also covers you from the sun, although the area is very shady.
  4. Visit the zone according to the number ie from Zone 1 to Zone 2 until Zone 4. Then you'll get the best of all zones.
  5. There are vending machines available along the trails. There are also shops selling drinks and ice-creams.
  6. There are toilets inside the park too.
  7. Be mindful of the birds - some don't like humans disturbing their peace/ territory. Well, humans don't like it too if someone else comes into their homes and run havoc. So, please mind your 'inquisitive and exploring' kids ya. Oh. This applies to adults too.

KL Bird Park Malaysia, Aktiviti Cuti Sekolah, Bird Park Kuala Lumpur, Hornbill Restaurant, Rawlins GLAM, Rawlins Lifestyle, Rawlins TravelsPlease do not litter. There are dustbins available everywhere.
  9. Do not feed the birds unless you are at the feeding area.
  10. There are timetables for Hornbill Feeding in Zone 3 and Bird Show in Zone 4. Check the schedules ok. Whereas Ostrich Feeding in Zone 4 last while the vegetable stocks last.
  11. Wanna take pictures? No problem. But no flash please as it might shock the birds and some might attack you (I think hahaha).
  12. Don't forget to bring your 'inquisitive and exploring' kids to the Education Station in Zone 4 to learn more about birds.
  13. KL Bird Park is handicap-friendly, so bring along your family and friends ok.
  14. There is a prayer room available beside the main entrance.
  15. As we are still fighting the Covid-19, please be mindful of your health, cleanliness and social distancing. #KitaJagaKita

So, those are some tips that I can share with all of you so that you could better enjoy your trip here. I know I did enjoy my tour and the trip made me realised that I have missed so much on these parks in Malaysia. I learnt a lot about our feathery friends - and some facts that I don't even know exist about birds.

You could also contact the KL Bird Park team if you are planning a family/ school trip here. They will be more than happy to assist.
