Deep Water [Movie Review] | Another movie about a plane crash, surviving at sea, and sharks. Why not?

Considering my job now requires me to travel overseas quite frequently and spend plenty of time on airplanes, you would think I'd avoid movies like this. But somehow, I keep coming back to them. Maybe it's curiosity. Maybe it's the adrenaline. Or maybe I'm secretly hoping to pick up a few survival tips. Just in case.

• Originally planned as a sequel to Bait (2012), the film was shelved in 2014 due to similarities with the MH370 tragedy. It was revived in 2023 and reimagined as a standalone story. 
• Despite sharing the same title as the 2022 film starring Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas, this movie is completely unrelated. 
• The poster is a clear nod to the iconic Jaws (1975) artwork, recreating its legendary shark pose.

One selfish decision and a single act of arrogance are all it takes to set a disaster in motion. This is an important fact to remember as you want to know who is the selfish dumba*s in the movie.

What begins as a routine international flight from Los Angeles to Shanghai quickly turns into every traveller's worst nightmare when a power bank stored in the cargo hold sparks a devastating fire. Within moments, an explosion tears through the aircraft, an engine is destroyed and the pilots are left with only one impossible choice. A desperate emergency landing in the middle of the ocean.

The impact leaves the aircraft shattered into several sections across a remote coral reef, with only a handful of passengers and crew making it out alive. 

Unfortunately, surviving the crash is only the beginning. Surrounded by deep water and cut off from any immediate rescue, the group soon discovers they are not alone. Hungry sharks begin circling the wreckage, turning every attempt to escape into a terrifying battle between life and death.

As panic spreads, different groups of survivors fight their own battles. Some risk everything to search for emergency equipment that could help rescuers locate them, while others remain trapped inside the sinking aircraft with every passing minute reducing their chances of survival. Leadership is constantly tested as fear, selfishness, courage and sacrifice emerge from the people stranded in the middle of nowhere.

The sharks are certainly the main threat, but human emotions, desperation and difficult choices become equally important throughout their survival mode.

This time, will the sea claim its prey?

MY REVIEW

What I Like:  

• The disaster unfolds so realistically that the plane crash genuinely made me question my decision to watch the movie. 
• The survival sequences are incredibly intense, with more than a few moments that had me clutching my pillow and covering my eyes.

What I Don't Like:

• Not that convincing. Just look at the last picture - the shark looks like a float and mind you, that plastic boat did not sink when the shark jump into it.    

Will I Watch It Again: Once is enough.
