What is abdominal separation?
Abdominal separation is commonly defined as a gap of roughly 2.7 cm or greater between the two sides of the abdominal muscles. The situation commonly occurs in two populations - newborns and pregnant women.

In the case a pregnant woman, the condition is caused by the growing of the uterus which causes the sides of the abdominal muscles to separate. 
The muscles might recover to its original positions in some women but unfortunately, some don't, which causes a 'pregnant-looking' tummy.  And be mindful that this tummy might weaken the postural support which lead to back pain.
