Alas Roban [Movie Review] | Enticed by the glowing reviews, I finally sat down to see if the hype was real.
Does it actually live up to the high rating or is it just clever marketing?

- The film generated buzz by pairing Michelle Ziudith, Indonesia’s "Princess of Drama" in her horror debut with Taskya Namya, the established "Princess of Horror".
- Based on Central Java’s real Alas Roban forest, nicknamed the Jalur Tengkorak, the film taps into a dark legacy. Famous for its lethal curves and a history of colonial-era tragedy, local legend says the forest is "fed" by the souls of the dead—a chilling myth embodied by the vengeful Dewi Raras.

Sita’s life in Pekalongan has been defined by struggle, but a new job at a hospital in Semarang finally offers a glimmer of hope. For this single mother, the position is more than a career change; it is the only way to afford the surgery her daughter, Gendis, needs to regain her sight.
Driven by the urgency to start her new role the following morning, Sita boards the last night bus, despite the route passing through the notorious Alas Roban. The journey takes an unsettling turn when the bus breaks down in the middle of the dense, silent forest. While waiting, Gendis needs a restroom, leading them to a small, isolated stall nearby. The woman running the stall kindly offers them a meal. While Sita declines, Gendis eats, unaware that this simple act of hospitality carries a heavy price.

Following the incident, Gendis’s behavior becomes increasingly strange. She begins talking to unseen presences and despite her visual impairment, starts drawing remarkably accurate and detailed maps of the winding Alas Roban road. It becomes clear that something followed her back from the woods.
Seeking answers, Sita turns to her cousin Tika and an ambulance driver named Anto, who is well-versed in the local lore. They discover that Gendis has been targeted by Dewi Raras, a vengeful spirit seeking retribution for an ancient ritualistic promise that was never fulfilled. The forest entity now views Gendis as the payment for that forgotten debt.
To save her daughter, Sita must face the myths she once dismissed. With the help of a spiritual guardian, Bu Emah, she is forced to return to the heart of the forest to perform a final, dangerous ritual before a looming sacred night. Sita is pushed to her absolute limits, caught between the modern world she knows and the supernatural forces that refuse to let go.
Will Sita be able to free Gendis from Dewi Raras?
