Shutter [Movie Review] | I watched the original version of Shutter, the Thai horror film, and loved it so much that I felt compelled to give this remake a chance.
Can this version surpass its predecessor?

- Inspired by Shutter, one of Asia’s most chilling horror films. A tribute to the Thai cult classic, this remake adds a darker psychological twist.
- This version tackles sexual violence and silencing head-on, shifting the film from pure horror into a socially driven thriller.

Darwin is a celebrated photographer who believes beauty is best preserved the old way. In a world obsessed with pixels and instant uploads, he clings to his manual camera, winding film with quiet reverence, as if each click can slow time and edit reality. Beside him is Pia, perceptive and grounded, the steady counterweight to his restless ambition.
One night, after an event, everything fractures.
On a deserted road, their car hits a woman who appears out of nowhere. Panic sets in. Afraid of scandal and the stain it could leave on his name, Darwin urges Pia to drive away. They leave the woman’s body behind, swallowed by darkness and silence.
Days pass and there is no news report or investigation about an accident. Darwin moves forward as if nothing happened. Pia cannot as guilt curls into her sleep. She begins seeing a woman no one else sees, standing at the edge of mirrors and doorways.
Then the photographs change.

Every image Darwin develops carries a shadow. A woman behind him. At first faint, like a flaw in the negative. Then clearer and closer. The disturbances spread beyond the darkroom. His neck throbs constantly. His shoulders feel burdened, as if something unseen is pressing down on him. He senses eyes on his back. Meanwhile, his old friends Tio, Reza and Abi die one by one under disturbing circumstances.
Pia starts searching for answers and uncovers Lilis, a brilliant former student Darwin once dated without ever truly loving. After he ended their relationship, Lilis spiraled. She attempted to take her own life and survived, but the damage lingered.
They travel to her hometown and uncover something deeply unsettling. Lilis’ mother has kept her daughter’s body in her bedroom, unable to accept the loss. Believing this unrest may be the source of the haunting, Darwin and Pia arrange for a proper burial. At her grave, Darwin apologizes, hoping it will end the torment.
It does not.
A hidden film negative reveals the darker truth. Darwin’s friends assaulted Lilis and threatened her into silence. Darwin was forced to photograph the crime, images meant to blackmail her if she spoke. She carried the trauma alone.
Pia leaves him.
With everyone gone, who remains by Darwin’s side?
