Anaconda [Movie Review]

Anaconda [Movie Review] | When I first heard about the film, I assumed it was a remake and immediately thought, why remake something that isn’t broken? Then I found out it was actually a comedy, and that idea won me over.

I ended up watching it with my siblings over the Christmas holidays, the kind of casual viewing where expectations are low and the mood is relaxed.

Did we enjoy it?

Childhood friends Doug and Griff have reached that uncomfortable stage of adulthood where dreams feel unfinished and choices start to itch. Griff fled to Los Angeles chasing stardom, clinging to acting workshops and blink-and-you’ll-miss-it TV roles, while Doug stayed behind in Buffalo, pouring his creative energy into absurdly elaborate wedding videos that feel like cinematic overkill for first dances and cake-cutting montages.

They are men haunted by the same question: what if they both pursue their dreams?

Their answer, inexplicably, is Anaconda. The 1997 jungle thriller looms large in their shared memory and when Griff claims he has secured the rights to remake it, the idea becomes their last roll of the dice.

With lifelong friends Kenny and Claire in tow, they head deep into the Amazon rainforest to shoot a scrappy indie reboot, armed with very little borrowed money, blind optimism and a pet snake, Heiter that is supposed to be terrifying but ends up very, very dead before the cameras can even roll.

Griff and Santiago, the pet handler venture into the jungle to find a snake replacement and stumble upon something far worse, an enormous anaconda that turns the rainforest into a feeding ground.

In the middle of it all, Ana appears, presenting herself as a righteous crusader against illegal gold miners. Doug, ever the romantic and the director desperate for meaning, reshapes the film around her, fuelling tension with Griff and exposing the fragile lies holding the project together.

The truth, when it arrives, is brutal. Griff never owned the rights. Ana is not who she claims to be. Anaconda is no longer a dream, but an eerie nightmare that is hungry and actively looking for its next meal. Bodies pile up, alliances fracture and filmmaking becomes survival.

Will their dream finally come true or will it all spiral into a nightmare that quite literally consumes them?

MY REVIEW

What I Like:

  • It is funny and no need for you to use your brain. You're not supposed to in this movie. Just have a laugh with your buddies.

  • And the cameos? I love!

What I Don't Like:

  • True that you don't have to think with this one, but some scenes are like 'that's absurd'. But, just enjoy it.
