  • Inspired by real inter-floor noise disputes in South Korea that turned deadly, director Kim Soo-jin drew from actual police case files to ground the horror in chilling realism.
  • The idea that Ju-Young’s hearing loss shields her from the curse came from the director’s partially deaf niece—transforming disability into strength. The chilling final line, “Don’t listen,” was inspired by a Korean superstition: if you hear your name whispered when alone, never answer or death will follow.

After years of saving, sisters Ju-Young and Ju-hee finally move into their dream home, a modest apartment that symbolizes hope and healing after a tragic childhood accident that left Ju-Young partially deaf and Ju-hee with a limp.

But their peace is short-lived. Soon, strange and untraceable noises begin echoing through the walls such as pounding, scraping and whispers that no one else seems to hear. Ju-hee grows increasingly obsessed, convinced the sound is coming from above. Then one day, she vanishes without a trace.

Haunted by guilt, Ju-Young returns from her factory job to find her missing sister. Inside the aging apartment complex, she discovers a world rotting from within where there are flickering lights, mould-covered walls and neighbours consumed by paranoia. The man living directly below them, in Unit 504, accuses Ju-Young of keeping him awake with unbearable noise and threatens to kill her. The building’s chairwoman dismisses her cries for help, insisting everyone who’s ever lived in Ju-hee’s apartment has gone mad.

Ju-Young’s search grows increasingly desperate. With the help of Ki-hoon, Ju-hee’s boyfriend, she uncovers disturbing clues: tenants who disappeared without a trace, a basement sealed off and reeking of decay and a chilling recording left behind by her sister. When Ju-Young listens, her new hearing aid begins picking up distorted voices: low murmurs and laughter that seem to seep from the very walls.

Her investigation leads her to a horrifying truth. The woman living in Unit 804 has been using strange sound devices to torment her neighbors, her mind twisted by grief over the death of her daughter. Years earlier, a man driven insane by the same noise murdered the building’s chairwoman and his remains now lie buried in the basement. The building itself seems cursed, each tragedy amplifying the next.

Will she find Ju-hee?

What I Like:

  • Unpredictable - at some points, I was confused whether the characters are alive or dead in the movie.
  • Beautiful empowerment sentiment - not all impairments make one helpless.

What I Don't Like:

  • So, care to explain the ending? Will there be a sequel?
  • I want more ghosts.

Will I Watch It Again: I don't mind watching it again

Overall: 4.4/ 5.0
