The movie is set during the Great War where Geppetto and Carlo, his son lives happily. Geppetto works on the church's interior with Carlo's assistant. A bomb was accidentally released and landed on the church while the duo was still working on the church, killing Carlo immediately.

Geppetto honors Carlo's memory by planting a pine seed near his grave and stays there, mourning the death of his son until the pine grows. He becomes an alcoholic throughout the period.

Sebastian, a traveling cricket takes up residence in the tree. Just as Sebastian settling down inside the tree, Geppetto decides to cut down the tree, to make a wooden son out of the tree. He curses throughout the process of carving out the son and passes out not soon after the puppet is finished.

Not long after, the Wood Sprite Goddess appears and gives life to the puppet, appointing Sebastian to be the guiding voice to the puppet, who she names Pinocchio. In return, any of Sebastian's wish will be granted.

Morning comes and Geppetto is surprised to see that the puppet is alive, learning new things that excites him at the very sight of it. When Geppetto goes to the church, Pinocchio follows despites that Geppetto advises him against it. His appearance frightens the villagers and the both of them were sent home.

When he walks to school the next day, Pinocchio is confronted by Count Volpe and Spazzatura, his performing monkey. Excited by the possibility of him becoming a star at the Count's circus, the Count have Pinocchio to sign a contract  and brings him to the circus, leaving Geppetto looking for him when he didn't come home that night.

Geppetto finds him performing at the circus. Geppetto and the Count have a tug-of-war over Pinocchio, resulting in Pinocchio being thrown to the road where he was hit by a car.

Pinocchio is sent to the afterlife where he meets the Black Rabbits. He is sent to meet Death, the sister to the Wood Sprite. There, Pinocchio finds out that he is immortal, that everytime he is dead, the time that he spents with Death will increase each time he returns. When he returns to life, Pinocchio decides that he will join the circus to earn money to send to Geppetto and to avoid from being drafted as an army.

While going after Pinocchio, Geppetto and Sebastian are swallowed by a seagiant.

In the meantime, Pinocchio is shot dead by an army after he mocks Mussolini during his performance. When he returns from his death, he is sent to an army training camp where he befriends Candlewick, another boy from his village.

Will Pinocchio be united with his father, through all these turmoils?
