Can you hear me, or can't you?

At first, it was funny hearing two hearing-incapable guys talking to each other. At times, it seems like they were having a quarrel. As days go by, you started to feel a bit annoyed as both of them tend to do things differently, not as per discussed.

Then you started to look for help and realised that your grandfather is deaf and your father is experiencing hearing loss.

And the fact is that these two are totally different conditions, makes you kinda helpless as to how to assist both of them.

hear.com a subsidiary of German-based audibene recently estimated about 2 million Malaysians currently suffer from hearing loss whether they realize it or not. Not to be mistaken with ‘deafness’, a condition where an individual experience ‘very little to no hearing at all’; ‘hearing loss’ refers to mild to the severe difficulty to hear

Contrary to the common belief that hearing loss only affects elderly people above the age of 65, hearing loss is a condition that can affect the society from as early as childbirth as babies may be born with the hereditary condition or physical defect that causes hearing loss.

However, as society grows older, people with hearing loss problems grow younger. In Malaysia, there is a rising number of people between the age of 35 and 45 who are facing difficulties with their day-to-day activities resulted from hearing loss. This scenario has affected productivity at the workplace and human relationship with people around them.

“We need to fight the stigma that says only old people suffer from hearing loss. People from this age group, 35 to 45 years old are at their peak stage of productivity, in both professional and personal contexts. At work, you are managing major projects or running a successful business. At home, you are parents to young children who need constant attention growing up,” said Alexander Evertz, Managing Director of hear.com in Malaysia. “We need to ensure that hearing loss does not affect how the society progresses, hence the urge to encourage people to seek assistance at an early stage to prevent degenerative effects in the long run when this issue goes untreated”.

Although there are various factors contributing to hearing loss, including ageing, infections, trauma and side effects from taking certain drugs, one should not discount the social factors such as the working environment. From working at a construction site to working at the airport hangar and even, working desk-bound while listening to music like most millennials do to drown noises around you, everybody is at a certain degree of risk to suffer from hearing loss.

Evertz added, there are no specific signs that are proven scientifically as symptoms of hearing loss. “When we speak to those people who come for a hearing test, we receive various feedbacks including some complaints from their family members on issues as simple as the television or music is switched on too loudly for an average person,” he said. “However, when you start to notice that you cannot catch up with conversation or distinguish spoken words and noises, that is a good indicator that you’re experiencing hearing loss. The best thing to do next is to get tested”.

hear.com welcomes Malaysians to come for a free consultation and offers a 7-day risk-free trial where customers can try out world-class, high-quality German technology hearing aids with step-by-step guidance from professional audiologists at the comfort of their own home. The World Health Organization, WHO published a report on hearing loss estimating an annual global loss of USD 750 billion. Although there are no specific studies conducted in Malaysia to assess losses incurred from hearing loss, 24 out of 30 traffic policemen suffered from noise-induced hearing loss due to prolonged exposure to traffic noises from vehicles as published by Universiti Putra Malaysia in 2007. In 2016, the Department of Occupational Safety and Health, DOSH recorded more than 7,000 workers’ hearing have been affected in the workplace. In 2018, 60 to 70% of the 700 occupational-related illnesses reported in Johor were linked to hearing loss.

“While the government has taken proactive measures to ensure employers provide a safe and healthy workplace for employees, we are concerned that the damage is already done and it’s time for intervention by offering solutions to these people so they can continue to contribute to the country’s economy,” said Evertz. The latest workforce data published by the Malaysian Department of Statistics in September 2018 revealed that there are close to 15 million people actively employed in various sectors across Malaysia.

hear.com organizes free health talks across Malaysia regularly as part of their corporate social responsibility to create more awareness of hearing loss among Malaysians. They also welcome the public to try out their hearing aids to find out which one provides the best solution to their hearing problems.
