Sisu: Road to Revenge [Movie Review]

Sisu: Road to Revenge [Movie Review] | I enjoyed the first film and I’m hoping this sequel avoids the all-too-familiar curse of diminishing returns.

By the way, Sisu has no direct English translation. It means enduring when giving up is no longer an option.

In the aftermath of World War II, Finland surrenders Karelia to the Soviet Union. Hardened by war and grief, Aatami returns from the frozen wilds of Lapland after striking gold, only to cross into Karelia one last time not for revenge, but for remembrance. His family was slaughtered there during the war and all that remains is a house heavy with memory. He dismantles it piece by piece, loads it onto a truck and sets off toward the Finnish border, determined to rebuild what little can still be saved.

But legends, especially the one that people dubbed as 'the man who refuses to die', do not travel unnoticed. The Red Army detects Aatami’s presence on Soviet soil and responds with fear disguised as authority. To stop a man forged by war itself, they release Igor Draganov from a Siberian prison. Draganov, a ruthless KGB operative, is promised freedom in exchange for hunting down Aatami. What Aatami does not yet know is that this is the same man who murdered his wife and child, the architect of his silence and rage.

Their paths collide in the unforgiving wilderness. Aatami cuts through Soviet troops with brutal efficiency, sparing Draganov in a moment thick with tragic irony. The mercy proves costly. Pursued by motor units and bombers, Aatami is eventually forced off a cliff and into the sea. Even then, death refuses to claim him. He salvages the remains of his home, fashions a raft from its logs and drifts back toward land, wounded but unbroken.

From there, Aatami marches forward with only a derelict tank and stolen dynamite,. But that did not guarantee him win. Draganov finally captures him. On a train bound for Siberia, Draganov reveals the truth about Aatami’s family, igniting a fury long restrained.

With his hands bound and his body pushed to the brink, can Aatami still claim his final revenge?

MY REVIEW

What I Like:

  • The cast is great. Aatami embodies his emotions well.
  • Beautiful choreography and actions.

What I Don't Like:

  • While the actions are beautifully choreographed, at times, some are a bit absurd. But, even the news nowadays are absurd.

Will I Watch It Again: I don't mind watching it again.

Overall: 4.2/ 5.0
