- The movie takes chilling inspiration from real-life serial killers like Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer, with the killer copying their exact methods—making the story feel disturbingly real.
- Sigourney Weaver called this one of her proudest roles and regrets it got lost among other thrillers.
- Sigourney Weaver studied real patients to play Dr. Helen Hudson—one of the first raw portrayals of agoraphobia on screen.
- While Se7en often gets the spotlight for redefining serial killer thrillers, Copycat quietly beat it to the screen by a month and some fans still consider it the smarter, more realistic of the two.

Dr. Helen Hudson, a renowned criminal psychologist and expert on serial killers, finds her life shattered in an instant. After giving a guest lecture on criminal psychology at a local university, she’s ambushed in the restroom by none other than Daryll Lee Cullum, a notorious serial killer she had previously studied, now escaped from prison.
The brutal attack leaves Helen mentally scarred and physically shaken. Though Cullum is quickly recaptured, the trauma sends Helen spiraling into extreme agoraphobia. She retreats from the world, locking herself inside a high-tech fortress of an apartment, where she lives behind computer screens and is supported only by her loyal friend, Andy.

A chilling wave of copycat murders sweeps through San Francisco. Detective M.J. Monahan and her partner Reuben Goetz, are handling the cases and need Helen’s insight to solve a case that’s both baffling and grotesque. Initially hesitant, Helen can’t help but get pulled back into the deadly dance. As bodies drop, it becomes disturbingly clear: the killer is recreating the work of infamous murderers there are such as Bundy, Dahmer, Berkowitz, and more. Worse, he’s mimicking the exact sequence of Helen’s lecture.
What would you do if your lecture notes became a serial killer’s manual to hunt and possibly to kill you?
