28 Years Later [Movie Review]

28 Years Later [Movie Review] | I always have this feeling that whatever happened in 2020 might come back one day, and it will infect people, worse than it was before. As we all know, viruses are fast to evolve. Something dormant might awaken soon. Are we ready for it?

And I have a friend who thinks that zombie will roam the Earth too, as viruses keep on evolving.

I love 28 Days Later, now so much love for 28 Weeks Later. Hope this one doesn't disappoint.

It was 2002 and the Rage Virus is claiming almost all. Jimmy is living with his family in the misty Scottish Highlands and now he is running from his infected family, twisted by the deadly Rage Virus. Seeking sanctuary, he found his father, a vicar, deep in prayer. Believing the virus marked the end of days, his father willingly faced the infected after giving Jimmy a cross and urged him to flee.

28 years later, mainland Europe is free of the virus, but Britain remains locked down. On the tidal island of Lindisfarne, survivors have built a life of fragile peace. Among them are Jamie, a weathered scavenger, his ailing wife Isla, and their curious 12-year-old son, Spike.

As part of a rite of passage, Jamie takes Spike to the mainland to introduce him to the infected, how to kill them and for him to know that the world is larger than their island. They stumble upon a new horror: the Alphas, smarter, faster, infected, leading savage packs. Narrowly escaping, they return to Lindisfarne, the Alpha hot on their heels and barely manage to return to their island, had the other villagers not intervened and killed the Alpha.

During a party to celebrate his safe return, Spike catches Jamie with Rosie, the village teacher. Spike also learns that her mother might be able to be cured by Dr. Kelson, a mysterious survivor known for burning bodies.

Determined, Spike sneaks Isla to the mainland, desperate for answers and maybe a cure.

Along the way, they were cornered by a gang of the infected before being rescued by Erik, a Swedish soldier and the last of his squad. The trio meets a pregnant infected woman who miraculously gives birth to a healthy baby. But peace is short-lived. Erik, fearing the worst, kills the mother and tries to end the child’s life until an Alpha decapitates him.

With the baby in her arms, Isla and Spike run from the huge Alpha running after them. They were saved by Dr. Kelson, who uses poisoned darts to dart Samson, the name of the Alpha.

Dr. Kelson brings the trio to his place, where he shows them a haunting pyramid of skulls that he named “memento mori.”

Dr. Kelson checked Isla condition and rendered that she has cancer and it is fatal. Isla asks for peace. Kelson obliges, and Spike watches his mother’s skull join the others in silent tribute.

Will Spike return to the island along with the baby and Dr. Kelson?

MY REVIEW

What I Like:

  • I love that the movie is a standalone - you don't have to watch the first two to understand this one.
  • I love the plot. And I assume there will be another sequel?
  • Be warned - it is gory and has some nudity (albeit there are all prosthetics).

What I Don't Like:

  • The start might be a bit slow - character building and all.

Will I Watch It Again: Yes, I will.

Overall: 4.8/ 5.0

The pictures are taken from multiple sources on the Internet. Thank you.
