Renfield [Movie Review]

Renfield [Movie Review] | Another vampire movie? Why not? But I have my reservation when I see Nicolas Cage in it. 

Again, why not?

• There is a rare psychiatric disorder called Renfield's Syndrome, an individual that is fascinated with drinking blood or believing themselves are a vampire. The syndrome is named after the character R.M. Renfield from Bram Stoker's novel 'Dracula'. 
• Nicolas has been longing to do a Vampire movie, apart from playing Superman and Captain Nemo. 

Renfield met Count Dracula way back in 1920s, when he was just a mere estate broker, trying to find a big break by landing Count's estate project. Instead, he became Count's familiar and servant. And Count further needs him to assist him in recuperating after he was burnt badly by Van Helsing as he needs blood to recover. Renfield was to capture the victims for him.

In present day, Renfield still carries the task of providing 'medical supplies' for the Count. He now possesses superhuman strength by regularly eating bugs. 

During one of his stake-out missions for victims, he comes across a self-help group for toxic and/ or co-dependant relationship. He singles out one of the participants, and decides to run after the abuser instead. He manages to hunt the abuser, who was currently in possession of stolen drugs from the Lobo crime family. He was attacking the abusers when an assassin sent by Teddy Lobo comes in and attacks him and the abusers. He manages to kill the assassin and sends Teddy Lobo runs from the crime scene. Teddy runs into a police checkpoint runs by Officer Rebecca Quincy. After some struggling, Teddy is captured by Rebecca and brought into station. Soon Teddy is released and Rebecca is furious about it. 

Renfield brings the abusers' corpses back to the Count. The Count is furious that the current 'medical supply' is not good enough for him as he needs blood from someone that is pure and innocent - unsuspecting tourists, nuns and school cheerleaders. Renfield goes to a restaurant to stake-out potential victims when Officer Rebecca comes in looking for a potential killer based on a clue from a crime scene and the lobo's family comes in attempting to kill Officer Rebecca.

Renfield gets caught in the middle of the confrontation and decides to assist Rebecca, as he sees Rebecca as an inspiration when she confronts Teddy and will not budge from her resolution to arrest Teddy, not even when Teddy pulls a gun to her head. 

The unlikely pair manages to fend off for themselves. Teddy lives. His mother is furious that the family's name is tarnished. Teddy meets the Count while looking for Renfield and forges an unlikely alliance. 

The Count wants undivided attention and service from Renfield while Teddy wants to exact revenge on Renfield and Rebecca. 

Teddy becomes amazingly powerful now that the Count also gives him power. 

Can Renfield ever be freed from the Count? 

MY REVIEW

Plot: 4.2/ 5.0 Very simple plot. An assistance wants a way out from a toxic relationship. Was unable to until someone inspired him to do so. 

In the end, one needs to admit that he/ she is in that kind of relationship first (realization) before finding the next step towards freedom. And a great support-system helps. 

Cast: 4.0/ 5.0 As expected. Not a great movie for both actors. Awkwafina kinda forgetable in this one. Some scenes managed to score some yawns from me. 

All in all, a fun movie to watch. But parents be aware - gory scenes ahead. 

Will I Watch It Again: I probably would, when too bored to watch anything else.
