The Courier [Movie Review]

The Courier [Movie Review] | Truth be told, historical drama is not my cup of tea as history tends to make me sleepy.

But when I see Benedict Cumberbatch is in it, I decided to give it a go. Did I make the right decision, or did I fall asleep mid-movie?

The movie is loosely based on a true event in the 1960s. Oleg Penkovsky, a-15 times decorated soldier is now a Soviet officer. He grows wary about the impending nuclear war by the Soviet with the rest of the world, that could literally destroy the world. Thus, he seeks assistance from forces outside of the Soviet, to MI6 and CIA.

Realising that all their agents will put Oleg's life in immediate danger, both agencies agreed to recruit a civilian that no one would pay attention to, to get close to Oleg and assist him in getting more nuclear secrets to the world, in order to prevent the war. And eventually, he will defect, along with his family.

The agencies agreed to recruit Greville Wynne, a British businessman to be their middle person. Reluctant at first, Greville agrees to assist the cause when the agencies enticed him that he could also expand his business in the Soviet. Greville poses as Oleg's business partner and keep on transmitting intelligence relating to the Soviet's missiles and their intention to station them in Cuba to both agencies, with he himself knows nothing of the content of the transmissions.

Greville's wife was first happy that his husband's business prosper but when the trips to Soviet becomes more often, she grows wary of the trips and suspects Greville of being unfaithful. Greville tries his best not to disclose any information to his family to secure their safety.

Along the 'business meetings', Greville and Oleg becomes close. People starts to notice their relationships and when a traitor in one of the agencies shared the leaked intelligence with his counterpart in Soviet, on his supposedly last trip to Soviet, both Greville and Oleg were caught.

Will their capture ends their effort to thwart the Cuban Missile Crisis?

MY REVIEW

Plot: 4.7/ 5.0 As in any history drama, the movie is straight forward with some actions in it. But somehow, the storytelling of The Courier was done is a way that I don't mind tagging along the ride. And to my surprise, I enjoyed the movie.

Cast: 4.8/ 5.0 Every actor did their part beautifully and fully committed. You should see how committed Benedict was for the part.

Will I watch it again: I most probably will, but not in the very near future.

The pictures are taken from multiple sources on the Internet. Thank you.
